  1. Instructions for making a Release:
  2. Authors: Conor MacNeill
  3. Stefan Bodewig
  4. Magesh Umasankar
  5. Note: This document was created in the context of releasing Ant 1.5.
  6. Please interpret the branch names, tags, etc. according to
  7. your context.
  8. 1. Propose a release plan for vote. This should set out the timetable for
  9. the release under ideal circumstances. The level of bugs reported
  10. can delay things. Generally, give a few weeks to "close" the source tree
  11. to further changes so people can finalise contributions, etc. At this time,
  12. the first beta will be cut and there will be then a period of beta testing,
  13. usually 1 month but this should be flexible.
  14. 2. Note that any mention of a deadline causes a flood of bug fixes, new tasks,
  15. etc. This needs to be managed as best it can. Some fixes will be applied,
  16. others held over. Make this clear in the release plan. The committers and
  17. particularly the release manager will need to make judgement calls here.
  18. Anything too "big" is likely to be held over.
  19. 3. Once the freeze date arrives, create a branch for the release builds. You
  20. will need to be comfortable in handling CVS branches with mutliple
  21. merge-backs to the main branch and even selected merges from the the main
  22. branch to the release branch.
  23. For more information on performing branching and merging, please visit
  24. http://www.durak.org/cvswebsites/doc/cvs_54.php#SEC54
  25. Label such branches ANT_15_BRANCH.
  26. 4. Once the branch is setup, the version numbers in CVS are changed. On the
  27. branch, the build.xml version becomes 1.5Beta1 while the main branch is
  28. updated to 1.6alpha.
  29. [[ TODO: Check if the documentation files also need to be updated to point
  30. to the right areas of Ant's website. ]]
  31. 5. Ensure you have all the external libraries that Ant uses in your
  32. lib/optional directory. To find out what libraries you need, execute
  33. the build with -verbose option and scan for lines beginning with
  34. "Unable to load...".
  35. 6. Next bootstrap, build and run the tests. Then build the distribution
  36. on the branch. It is important that this be a clean build. Label this with
  37. a tag ANT_15_B1.
  38. 7. Sign the distribution files using the following simple script
  39. #!/bin/sh
  40. for i in distribution/*
  41. do
  42. echo "Signing " $i
  43. gpg -a -b --force-v3-sigs $i
  44. done
  45. Try to do this on Linux since the gpg signatures generated on Windows may
  46. cause some PGP users problems verifying signatures even though they seem
  47. OK.
  48. Before you do that, ensure that the key you use is inside the KEYS
  49. file in Ant's CVS repository - and that you perform a cvs update on
  50. the KEYS file in /www/www.apache.org/dist/ant/
  51. Also make sure you have sent the key that you use to a public
  52. keyserver.
  53. 8. The beta distribution is now ready to go. Bundle it up into a tar.gz file
  54. and scp to your apache account.
  55. 9. Meanwhile, convert the WHATSNEW file into HTML for the README file on the
  56. website. See the previous release directories for examples of these files.
  57. Add instructions and warnings (GNU tar format issues, etc).
  58. You may choose to use the text2html convertor present at
  59. http://www.aigeek.com/txt2html/
  60. [[ TODO: This must perhaps be an Ant task. ]]
  61. 10. Once this is uploaded, unpack things, create the release directory,
  62. something like v1.5Beta1, push the release and README files into this
  63. directory.
  64. The files should go to /www/jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-ant/release
  65. on daedalus.
  66. 11. Address the available release tags in BugZilla. Create a new tag 1.5Beta1
  67. and a 1.6alpha. Assign all existing 1.5 alpha bugs to one of these release
  68. labels.
  69. 12. Once that is done, do a test download to make sure everything is OK. A
  70. common problem may be:
  71. * the file's mime type is not recognized and is interpreted as
  72. text/plain. Fix it by using some .htaccess magic (AddEncoding stuff)
  73. * Your gz.asc files are not being displayed properly (RemoveEncoing stuff)
  74. If it looks OK, announce it on ant-dev and ant-user. After a few
  75. days pass and there are no major problems, a wider announcement is
  76. made (main jakarta website, announcements@jakarta.apache.org,
  77. etc).
  78. Also ensure you:
  79. * Update antnews.xml (Announcement)
  80. * Update faq.xml (Ant's history details - not for betas)
  81. * Update index.xml (Announcement, latest release details)
  82. * Update problems.xml (Debug Output details - not for betas IMHO -SB)
  83. Generate the html files by invoking ant on docs.xml - you need
  84. jakarta-site2 checked out for this. Commit the modified/generated
  85. files and also perform a cvs update on files in daedalus'
  86. /www/jakarta.apache.org/ant.
  87. Announce beta releases at freshmeat.net (Stefan Bodewig is the
  88. owner of Ant's project entry - bug him ;-).
  89. 13. As problems in the beta are discovered, there may be a need for
  90. one or more subsequent betas. The release manager makes this
  91. call. Each time, the versions are updated and the above process is
  92. repeated. Try not to have too many betas.
  93. 14. Try to advertise the need for testing of the betas as much as possible.
  94. This would eliminate the need to release minor patch versions like
  95. we had to do when releasing Ant 1.4.
  96. To monitor the number of downloads, look at the access_log
  97. file under /usr/local/apache2/logs
  98. 15. When the final beta is considered OK, propose a vote on ant-dev to
  99. officially adopt the latest beta as the Ant 1.5 release. If it is passed,
  100. (it usually does,) this would be labelled ANT_15 and built in a similar
  101. fashion to the above process.
  102. 16. BUT
  103. This time the directory you upload the files to is different and
  104. you'll have to do some house-keeping for the old release:
  105. * create a directory for the old release in
  106. /www/jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-ant/release on daedalus.
  107. * Move the release notes, .zip files and corresponding signatures
  108. and md5 hashes of the old release from /www/www.apache.org/dist/ant
  109. to a matching directory structure in
  110. /www/jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-ant/release.
  111. * remove the remaining files except for the KEYS file from
  112. /www/www.apache.org/dist/ant.
  113. * upload the new release files to
  114. /www/www.apache.org/dist/ant/[source|binary].
  115. * Create proper -current symlinks in /www/www.apache.org/dist/ant/
  116. 17. Change the links in /xdocs/bindownload.xml and /xdocs/srcdownload.xml,
  117. regenerate the HTML files, commit and update the site.
  118. As the mirrors may need some days to pick up the new release, you
  119. may want to add a note to that effect to the pages and remove it a few
  120. days later.
  121. 18. Now and perhaps during previous betas any changes on the branch must
  122. be merged back into the tree.
  123. 19. At this point in time, the release is done and announcements are made.
  124. [[TODO: Identify the mailing lists where announcements are to be made.
  125. Also identify the webpages to which the announcements must go. ]]
  126. Apache mailing lists that should get the announcements:
  127. announce@jakarta.apache.org, announce@xml.apache.org,
  128. announce@apache.org, ant-dev and ant-user.
  129. Announce release at freshmeat.net
  130. (Stefan Bodewig is the owner of Ant's project entry - bug him ;-).
  131. Announce release in the usenet groups comp.lang.java.softwaretools
  132. and comp.lang.java.announce.
  133. 20. You can now reacquaint yourself with your family and friends.
