  61. <p>Ant 1.7 introduces a resource framework. Some of the core ant
  62. tasks such as &lt;copy/&gt; are now able to process not only file
  63. system resources but also zip entries, tar entries, paths, ...
  64. Resource collections group resources, and can be further
  65. combined with operators such as union and intersection. This
  66. can be extended by custom resources and custom tasks using resources.</p>
  67. <p>
  68. Ant 1.7 starts outsourcing of optional tasks to Antlibs.
  69. The .NET antlib in preparation will replace the .NET optional tasks which ship in Ant.
  70. Support for the version control system Subversion will be only provided as an antlib to
  71. be released shortly.

  86. <section name="Apache Ant">
  87. <p>
  88. Apache Ant is a Java-based build tool. In theory, it is kind of like
  89. Make, but without Make's wrinkles.
  90. </p>
  91. <p>
  92. Why another build tool when there is already <em>make</em>, <em>gnumake</em>,
  93. <em>nmake</em>, <em>jam</em>, and
  94. others? Because all those tools have limitations that Ant's original author
  95. couldn't live with when developing software across multiple platforms. Make-like
  96. tools are inherently shell-based -- they evaluate a set of dependencies, then
  97. execute commands not unlike what you would issue in a shell. This means that you
  98. can easily extend these tools by using or writing any program for the OS that
  99. you are working on. However, this also means that you limit yourself to the OS,
  100. or at least the OS type such as Unix, that you are working on.
  101. </p>
  102. <p>
  103. Makefiles are inherently evil as well. Anybody who has worked on them for any
  104. time has run into the dreaded tab problem. &quot; Is my command not executing
  105. because I have a space in front of my tab!!!&quot; said the original author of
  106. Ant way too many times. Tools like Jam took care of this to a great degree, but
  107. still have yet another format to use and remember.
  108. </p>
  109. <p>
  110. Ant is different. Instead of a model where it is extended with shell-based
  111. commands, Ant is extended using Java classes. Instead of writing shell commands,
  112. the configuration files are XML-based, calling out a target tree where various
  113. tasks get executed. Each task is run by an object that implements a particular
  114. Task interface.
  115. </p>
  116. <p>
  117. Granted, this removes some of the expressive power that is inherent by being
  118. able to construct a shell command such as
  119. <code>`find . -name foo -exec rm {}`</code>, but it
  120. gives you the ability to be cross platform -- to work anywhere and everywhere.
  121. And hey, if you really need to execute a shell command, Ant has an
  122. <code>&lt;exec&gt;</code> task that
  123. allows different commands to be executed based on the OS that it is executing
  124. on.
