204.

205.
Lexically scoped local properties, i.e. properties that are only
206. defined inside a target,
207. sequential block or similar environment.

208.
<import> can now import from any file- or URL-providing resource -
209. this includes <javaresource>.

210.
Various improvements to the directory scanning code that help
211. with symbolic link cycles (as can be found on MacOS X Java
212. installations for example) and improve scanning performance.
213. For big directory trees the improvement is
214. dramatic.

215.
The way developers can extend Ant's property expansion algorithm has been rewritten
216. (breaking the older API) to be easier to use and be more powerful.
217.

218.
a new top level element extension-point allows build files to be
219. extended with custom targets more easily

220.
At the same time the if and unless attributes have been rewritten to do the expected
221. thing if applied to a property expansion (i.e. if="${foo}" will mean "yes, do it"
222. if ${foo} expands to true, in Ant 1.7.1 it would mean "no" unless a property named
223. "true" existed). This adds "testing conditions" as a new use-case to property
224. expansion.

225.
Ant now requires Java 1.4 or later

226.
new task include provides an alternative to <import> that
227. should be preferred when you don't want to override any targets

228.
numerous bug fixes and improvements as documented in Bugzilla
229. and in WHATSNEW

277.

278.
279. Apache Ant
280.

281.

282. Apache Ant is a Java-based build tool. In theory, it is kind of like
283. Make, but without Make's wrinkles.
284.

285.

286. Why another build tool when there is already make, gnumake,
287. nmake, jam, and
288. others? Because all those tools have limitations that Ant's original author
289. couldn't live with when developing software across multiple platforms. Make-like
290. tools are inherently shell-based -- they evaluate a set of dependencies, then
291. execute commands not unlike what you would issue in a shell. This means that you
292. can easily extend these tools by using or writing any program for the OS that
293. you are working on. However, this also means that you limit yourself to the OS,
294. or at least the OS type such as Unix, that you are working on.
295.

296.

297. Makefiles are inherently evil as well. Anybody who has worked on them for any
298. time has run into the dreaded tab problem. "Is my command not executing
299. because I have a space in front of my tab!!!" said the original author of
300. Ant way too many times. Tools like Jam took care of this to a great degree, but
301. still have yet another format to use and remember.
302.

303.

304. Ant is different. Instead of a model where it is extended with shell-based
305. commands, Ant is extended using Java classes. Instead of writing shell commands,
306. the configuration files are XML-based, calling out a target tree where various
307. tasks get executed. Each task is run by an object that implements a particular
308. Task interface.
309.

310.

311. Granted, this removes some of the expressive power that is inherent by being
312. able to construct a shell command such as
313.
`find . -name foo -exec rm {}`
, but it
314. gives you the ability to be cross platform -- to work anywhere and everywhere.
315. And hey, if you really need to execute a shell command, Ant has an
316.
<exec>
task that
317. allows different commands to be executed based on the OS that it is executing
318. on.
319.
