  22. <h3>June 2, 2005 - Ant 1.6.5 Available</h3>
  23. <p>Apache Ant 1.6.5 is now available for <a
  24. href="http://ant.apache.org/bindownload.cgi">download</a>.</p>
  25. <p>This is a bug fix release.</p>
  26. </section>
  27. <section name="Apache Ant">
  28. <p>
  29. Apache Ant is a Java-based build tool. In theory, it is kind of like
  30. Make, but without Make's wrinkles.
  31. </p>
  32. <p>
  33. Why another build tool when there is already <em>make</em>, <em>gnumake</em>,
  34. <em>nmake</em>, <em>jam</em>, and
  35. others? Because all those tools have limitations that Ant's original author
  36. couldn't live with when developing software across multiple platforms. Make-like
  37. tools are inherently shell-based -- they evaluate a set of dependencies, then
  38. execute commands not unlike what you would issue in a shell. This means that you
  39. can easily extend these tools by using or writing any program for the OS that
  40. you are working on. However, this also means that you limit yourself to the OS,
  41. or at least the OS type such as Unix, that you are working on.
  42. </p>
  43. <p>
  44. Makefiles are inherently evil as well. Anybody who has worked on them for any
  45. time has run into the dreaded tab problem. &quot; Is my command not executing
  46. because I have a space in front of my tab!!!&quot; said the original author of
  47. Ant way too many times. Tools like Jam took care of this to a great degree, but
  48. still have yet another format to use and remember.
  49. </p>
  50. <p>
  51. Ant is different. Instead of a model where it is extended with shell-based
  52. commands, Ant is extended using Java classes. Instead of writing shell commands,
  53. the configuration files are XML-based, calling out a target tree where various
  54. tasks get executed. Each task is run by an object that implements a particular
  55. Task interface.
  56. </p>
  57. <p>
  58. Granted, this removes some of the expressive power that is inherent by being
  59. able to construct a shell command such as
  60. <code>`find . -name foo -exec rm {}`</code>, but it
  61. gives you the ability to be cross platform -- to work anywhere and everywhere.
  62. And hey, if you really need to execute a shell command, Ant has an
  63. <code>&lt;exec&gt;</code> task that
  64. allows different commands to be executed based on the OS that it is executing
  65. on.
